BtL volunteering with Hospice Compassus

The Bridges to Life(BtL) students (photo: 4 students who are blind/visually impaired) have a new volunteer partnership with Hospice Compassus, in Colorado Springs. During Hospice’s orientation, students had the opportunity to ask questions and make connections to Compassus. BtL students felt honored to assemble and decorate boxes for more than 400 veterans who live in nursing homes and other residences around Colorado.

Each box contained miniature American flags, copies of a poem made by Jonna Fuchs, pins of the American flag, and a very special item provided by the project Stars for Our Troops, that was an individually embroidered star coming from repurposing old American flags. These came with a note: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.”
