For students who are blind or visually impaired, the Expanded Core Curriculum, (ECC), makes up an integral part of their experiential learning including sequential and systematic opportunities in areas such as social interaction and independent living skills as well as skills in recreation and leisure. On a recent camping trip, taken in the outdoors of our beautiful campus, some of our Bridges to Life students gained first-hand knowledge of these areas of the ECC.
The students, 18-20 years old, engaged in familiar outdoor activities: cooked meals, set up and took down tents, kept the campsite clean, and engaged in recreational activities such as playing Uno, singing and riding tandem and recumbent bicycles. This multifaceted learning opportunity provided a chance for students to experience a tradition some might say is as American as attending a baseball game or eating apple pie!
