CDLS Update
A few weeks ago, CSDB Outreach staff concluded another semester of virtual American Sign Language (ASL) classes for high school students throughout the State of Colorado. Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind has been providing ASL classes to high school students through virtual means even long before the pandemic hit. The virtual ASL classes are offered through the Colorado Distance Learning Solutions (CDLS) and CDLS is a state-supported platform offering a variety of online courses for students needing to supplement their learning.
Prior to the 2020-2021 school year, the Outreach staff taught and average of 60 students but with the onset of the pandemic, the number of students registering for our virtual ASL classes grew to nearly 100. We expect equally large numbers of students for the spring semester. In addition, distance learning can bridge the gaps that many students, who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and/or Blind/Vision Impaired, face at their schools. ASL classes, through Zoom, are here to stay and CSDB looks forward to continuing to offer high school students an opportunity to learn one of the fastest growing languages, ASL.
