Front Page-Reflections from a first-year teacher
Written by Jerred Sonneborn, School for the Blind
The unexpected has been the course of my story. From intern, to my first teaching job, then navigating through the current state of education. There was not a textbook presented in my studies that prepared me for this year. However, the cooperation from students and parents as well as the collaboration amongst fellow faculty has shown me that a strong community such as CSDB can band together and make the most of the current situation.
Thus far, positivity has driven my classes this school year and with a combination of students attending class via in-person or e-learning, creativity has been the focal point in my instruction. I am brainstorming every minute of the day exploring ways to make math fun and motivating for both in-person and online students. Regardless of the platform students are participating and encouraging one another. They are holding each other accountable and are engaged. It may not be perfect, but the way students have responded to the constant changes has been remarkable to witness. When a student shows up to my class whether it is on zoom or walking through my classroom doorway, there is always an excitement to learn.
