Gardens, ladybugs and more!
Spring is thriving in the School for the Deaf Kindergarten-1st grade classroom! We are becoming little engineers with our garden art area. Students will ‘build a garden’ when it is their turn at that center. We have rainbow transparent color pebbles to create flowers at our light table and an Enchanted Bulldog Florist business! During math, students have been learning how to count dollars and identify different ways to create money combinations using one dollar, five dollar and ten dollar bills. When operating our florist business, our varying flowers are different prices and the assigned student for that center will create a floral bundle, telling you how much it will cost. The student will then operate as a cashier and count out the money to be sure the correct amount is given!
We are currently studying the life cycle of a ladybug and even have live larvae bugs in a ladybug dome in our classroom. Our students are excited to watch the cycle unfold! In the next upcoming days, we will also study the life cycle of plants and begin to plant some seeds and hang in a window to watch the roots and sprouts occur! We just wrapped up our unit on wants vs. needs and took down the Target Shopping center where students enjoyed selecting their needs and wants to purchase! Our next focus is to become familiar with the differences between facts vs opinions for our literacy unit.
We are still learning to count forward. Our talented aide, Arlyn, has drawn our students with huge toothy grins and Velcro teeth added for students to practice counting and remembering the numerical order!
Math classes will shift soon to measuring with cubes, string and rulers. We will also begin to learn how to compare weights of different objects! With the development of these skills, we will engage in a STEAM project where students will attempt to build their own kites and test them out. We are excited to be celebrating warmer weather finally!
