Secondary students in the School for the Blind kicked off the 2024-2025 school year with a two-day orientation before beginning their regular academic schedules, a change from previous school years. Day One began with time with case managers for “get to know you” circles, review of schedules, and time management tips. The Dean and School Psychologist then reviewed expectations for the cafeteria, attendance and tardies, as well as arrival and dismissal guidelines. Teachers and service providers introduced and shared information about themselves and their roles in an assembly, and the new Universal P.R.I.D.E. Expectations for positive behavior were introduced. The first day ended with an opportunity to explore our new accessible playground and organize and decorate lockers. Day Two began again with case managers, this time with a focus on organizational skills, homework and study hall expectations. Students then reviewed emergency drills and procedures with the Director of Security and practiced the fire evacuation route to the gym. After lunch, they were assigned devices, reviewed and signed our annual technology contract, and completed an “All About Me” activity to share information about themselves. The day ended with a fun scavenger hunt around campus and time to enjoy a snack and socialize with friends in the library. A great start to what promises to be a great year!
