Outreach at the Platteville-Gilcrest Fire Department
16 families with children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, under the age of 5 years, met at the Platteville-Gilcrest Fire Station for a very fun Early Literacy event through CSDB Outreach! In addition to the story and music classes, parents learned about the importance of fire safety for their children including alerting devices, some important signs to know, and how to communicate with their local departments to ensure they know about specific needs for their children in case of emergency.
The highlight was exploring the fire trucks and ambulance and interacting with a fireman in his full gear! Fun fact, the firefighter’s helmets are equipped with bone conduction amplification technology to help them hear with all of their gear. What a fun connection to many of our children using bone conduction technology!
We all had a blast and thank the Platteville-Gilcrest Fire Department for hosting us and the families for attending!
