A Community Literacy event was hosted at Powerhouse Science Center for children who are Deaf/HH (birth to 18) and their families in Durango, Colorado. 60 people attended the event total, which included 9 families, local professionals, and CSDB staff. We also welcomed families and professionals from New Mexico.
ASL Storytime featured the book “From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle with an English interpreter. We also had ice breaker activities and played fun games. Hearing siblings and family members learned new ASL vocabulary, how to read to their Deaf/HH children, and learn appropriate Deaf culture behavior in their daily environment. CCDHHDB (RAS) interpreters and a CDI interpreter attended and had their own booth with freebies along with a CSDB booth. The Deaf/HH students met deaf role models while parents exchanged contact information. Professionals were able to network and build relationships with families and each other!
The event was successful, and everyone is looking forward to the next opportunity!
