Outreach School-age Services

CSDB’s mission to provide high quality support and instruction does not end with students on the CSDB campus! In addition to day and residential students who attend on-campus programs, the CSDB Outreach department offers support to students across the state. Traveling teachers, called itinerants, journey over Colorado's mountain passes and across rolling plains to provide services to students within their local school districts.

Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) and Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMSs) serve school-age students who are blind and visually impaired, while Teachers of the Deaf (TODs) serve school-age students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. TVIs/COMSs provide specialized instruction, such as student use of tools and devices to access the curriculum as well as travel skills with tools and long white canes. TODs provide specialized instruction, such as ensuring Deaf and Hard of Hearing students have access in their classes, educating general education teachers about hearing loss, and providing instruction to students with hearing differences. These services are accompanied by the provision of support and resources to the students’ families and school teams to promote inclusion, independence, and success.

For the 2022-2023 school year, CSDB Outreach has contracted with 27 administrative units to provide services for approximately 135 students in their local school or chosen charter school.
