Volunteering with Hospice Compassus

The Bridges to Life students have a new volunteer partnership with Hospice Compassus in Colorado Springs. BtL students enjoyed the opportunity to volunteer with Hospice Compassus because they practiced what they have been learning related to volunteering and about Hospice. During Hospice’s presentation, students had the opportunity to ask questions and make connections to Compassus due to previous experiences of serving in our community. BtL’s first volunteer opportunity was to honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces for our country this Veterans Day. BtL students assembled and decorated boxes for veterans in nursing homes and other residences around Colorado. Each box contained miniature American flags, copies of a poem made by Jonna Fuchs, pins of the American flag, and a very special item provided by the project  Stars for Our Troops, Inc. that was an individually embroidered star coming from repurpose old American flags. These came with a note: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.”

We are humbled to honor and provide boxes to celebrate over 400 veterans around Colorado, and we are looking for more opportunities to volunteer with Hospice Compassus in the near future.
